Choosing Between Public and Private School: What’s Best for Your Family?

Choosing a school for your child is more than an academic decision—it’s a spiritual one, too. As parents, we are called to guide our children not only in knowledge, but in faith, character, and purpose. When deciding between public and private schools, prayerful consideration and alignment with your family’s values are key.

Public School Considerations

Public schools offer tuition-free education and reflect the diversity of the broader community. Many offer strong academic programs, extracurricular activities, and a wider range of specialized support services. Class sizes are typically larger in public schools.

However, because public schools follow state standards, faith-based teaching and prayer are typically not part of the school day. Families who choose public schools often take a more active role in reinforcing biblical values at home and through church involvement.

Private School Considerations

Private schools, especially Christian schools, often integrate faith into every aspect of learning. Biblical principles, prayer, and character development are woven into the curriculum, helping children grow spiritually alongside their academics.

Smaller class sizes and close-knit communities can foster strong relationships and mentorship. While tuition is a factor, many families view private Christian education as an investment in both their child’s education and faith foundation. Many private schools offer financial aid and scholarship programs to help make faith-based education more accessible.

Some special education and support services are available in private schools, but at a more limited capacity than in public schools.

Making the Decision Prayerfully

When choosing a school, consider:

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to “Train up a child in the way he should go.” Whether your family chooses public or private school, the most important influence remains the faith lived out at home. Seek God’s guidance, ask wise counsel, and trust that He will lead your family to the right decision for this season.
