Could a Lutheran Education be More Affordable Than you Think?

Choosing a Lutheran education is an important decision. We know that for many families, the desire to provide their children with a Christ-centered education is strong, but the cost of tuition can sometimes make that decision challenging. A new federal program may help.

A Closer Look at the Education Freedom Tax Credit

Beginning January 1, 2027, the Education Freedom Tax Credit will provide a new way for individuals to support K–12 scholarships for students attending private schools. Through Opportunity Scholarships of Nebraska (OSN), individuals can contribute up to $1,700 and receive a dollar-for-dollar federal income tax credit.

This is different from a tax deduction. A tax credit directly reduces the amount of federal income tax you owe. For example, if you make a qualifying $1,000 contribution, you may receive a $1,000 federal tax credit, subject to the requirements of the program and your individual tax situation.

How does this help families?

The contributions made through OSN will be used to provide scholarships for eligible Nebraska students. OSN plans to focus on tuition scholarships for students attending their choice of participating nonpublic schools. Students from households with income up to 300% of the area’s median gross income may be eligible.

All of the Lutheran Schools of Lincoln are already participating with OSN! If you are a current family, this program may still support your financial needs. For a family considering Lutheran education, a scholarship could help make that choice possible. And for those who want to support Christian education, this program offers an exciting opportunity to help make Lutheran education more accessible to more children in our community.

At Lutheran Schools of Lincoln, we believe education is about more than academics. We want every child to know they are loved by God, grow in their God-given gifts, and be equipped to serve others. The Education Freedom Tax Credit has the potential to open the door for more families to experience that kind of education. So, whether you are exploring a Lutheran school for your child or looking for a way to help another family, this new opportunity is worth exploring further.
